Roofing service

Roof cleaning across Nottingham, Birmingham, Manchester & London

Safe removal of moss, algae, lichen, and debris. Extends tile life and restores your roof's original look.

Moss is not just an appearance problem. A thick moss layer holds water against the covering long after the rain has stopped, and in a cold snap that trapped water freezes and expands, which is what breaks the face off a tile. Clumps that come loose then wash into the gutters and block them, so a mossy roof tends to arrive with a gutter problem attached.

Cleaning has to be done carefully, though. High-pressure washing strips the protective surface off concrete tiles and can drive water up under the courses — doing more damage than the moss was. The right approach is a controlled clean appropriate to your covering, followed by clearing out everything that comes down with it.

Questions about roof cleaning

Will pressure washing damage my roof?

It can, which is why we do not treat every roof the same way. High pressure erodes the surface of concrete tiles and can force water beneath the courses. The method has to suit the covering.

Does moss actually damage a roof?

It contributes. Moss holds moisture against the tiles, and freeze-thaw is what does the real damage over successive winters. It also sheds into gutters and blocks them, which puts water where you do not want it.

Will it come back?

On a shaded or north-facing slope, eventually — that is simply the conditions. Keeping the gutters clear and having the roof looked at periodically keeps it from getting back to the point where it causes harm.
