Roofing service

Slate roofing across Nottingham, Birmingham, Manchester & London

Premium natural slate for elegance, durability, and kerb appeal. Suited to new builds and heritage roof repairs alike.

Natural slate is the covering much of Victorian Britain was built with, and there is a reason it is still there. It is dense, it does not absorb water, it weathers to a colour no manufactured product quite reproduces, and a slate roof that has been properly laid and properly maintained has an exceptionally long service life.

Slate is also unforgiving of poor workmanship. It has to be holed and hung correctly, the headlap has to be right for the pitch, and the nails have to outlast the slate. Getting that right on a heritage roof — and getting the replacements to sit flush with a century of weathering around them — is careful work, and we treat it that way.

Questions about slate roofing

My slates keep slipping. Does that mean a new roof?

Not necessarily, but it is worth investigating properly. Slates that slip in numbers often point to nail fatigue — the fixings corroding away while the slate itself is still sound. Isolated slips are a repair; widespread nail failure usually means the roof is telling you it wants stripping and relaying. The survey will show which one you have.

Can you match slate on a period property?

We source as close a match as we can in size, thickness and colour, and set replacements so they sit correctly with the weathered slate around them. On heritage roofs the aim is a repair that is not obvious from the street.

Is natural slate worth the extra over concrete tile?

On the right property, many owners think so — for service life, for weight and appearance, and for how it sits with neighbouring roofs on a period terrace. We will price both honestly and let you decide.
